SUU Student Choreographs Work for Dance Concert
January 2017, Cedar City, Utah
Allison Mathis, a senior at SUU used her talents and passion for visual arts
to complete a project during her undergraduate studies. Allison recognized
an opportunity to expand her skills and talents in dance by choreographing a
work to be presented in the SUU Student Dance Concert: Impact that
premiered in December 2016. Understanding the potential positive impact
this project would have on her, not only in her undergraduate studies but
also in her future career, she took on the opportunity with full force.
The first part of this project started with Allison presenting her
choreographic ideas to the dance faculty at SUU in the spring of 2016. The
faculty then selected pieces they found had potential growth to be performed
at the concert. Allison’s piece was selected. Starting at the beginning of fall
semester, auditions were held and the student choreographers selected
dancers to be in their individual casts. Allison selected three talented
dancers and immediately began weekly rehearsals that lasted throughout the
semester leading up to the concert. The concert consisted of five
performances, four evenings and one matinee.
Allison is a dedicated and passionate person who put her whole self in this
project. She came out of this project with increased skills and abilities in
leadership, creativity and confidence in her abilities and is ready to take on
the competitive world of dance as she approaches graduation this spring.
